In short

Coocazoo makes school backpacks for secondary school. The Mate is the roomy all-rounder with four compartments, the Porter can be expanded, the Every is the lightest at around 1 kg, and the Byte has its own compartment for digital accessories. Mate, Porter and Byte grow with your child thanks to the Easy Grow System.

Starting secondary school brings new subjects, more books and often a longer way to school. A good school backpack distributes weight across the shoulders and hips and can be adjusted as your child grows. Here you'll find the four current Coocazoo models compared, plus what to look out for when trying one on.

Which Coocazoo suits your child?

  • Lots of material, lots of compartments: Mate. Two main compartments keep books and notebooks separate, and the front pocket holds a lunch box and small items.
  • Sometimes a lot, sometimes a little: Porter. It can be expanded on days with sport or a project, otherwise it stays compact.
  • Long school commutes, light luggage: Every. At around 1 kg of its own weight, it eases the load on the back, and the ventilated back helps on warm days.
  • Tablet, headphones and charging cable: Byte. The multifunctional compartment keeps digital accessories separate from books.

For primary school, a school satchel is usually still the better choice. You'll find an overview in our school satchels and in our Lässig school satchel comparison.

Easy Grow System: a backpack that grows with your child

Children often grow several centimetres a year during secondary school. With the Easy Grow System, you adjust the height of the shoulder straps, so the backpack sits correctly on the back again after a growth spurt. The chest and hip straps are adjustable and distribute weight across the chest and pelvis.

The Every works on a different principle: padded, length-adjustable shoulder straps and position straps let you pull it close to the body. This is enough for many children, but there's no Easy Grow System on this model.

Checking the fit: 4 points to check when trying one on

  1. Test with weight: Pack in books and a full water bottle – every backpack fits well when empty.
  2. Height: The top edge should end roughly at shoulder height, and the backpack shouldn't hang below the hips.
  3. Straps: The shoulder straps should sit without gaps, the hip belt should rest on the pelvis, and the chest strap at chest height.
  4. Packing: Heavy items close to the back, light items towards the front. Our article How to pack a backpack correctly shows you how.
Rule of thumb: A packed school backpack should weigh no more than about ten percent of body weight. A lightweight backpack like the Every leaves more room for books.

Frequently asked questions about Coocazoo school backpacks

Which Coocazoo school backpack is the lightest?

The Every: according to the manufacturer, it weighs around 1 kg. The Porter weighs about 1.1 kg, and the Mate and Byte around 1.25 to 1.27 kg. All four models give your child 28 to 30 litres of space.

What is Coocazoo's Easy Grow System?

A carrying system that grows with your child: the shoulder straps can be adjusted in height, so the backpack fits the back again after every growth spurt. Mate, Porter and Byte have the Easy Grow System, while the Every has an ergonomic back system with adjustable position straps.

From which school year does a Coocazoo school backpack fit?

Usually from the start of secondary school, so from year five onwards. However, the fit is what matters: the top edge of the backpack should end roughly at shoulder height, and the hip belt should rest on the pelvis.

How many litres should a school backpack have?

For secondary school, 25 to 30 litres is typical. This leaves room for books, notebooks, a folder, a lunch box and a water bottle. The Mate, Porter and Every have 30 litres, and the Byte has 28 litres.

What's the difference between the Mate and the Porter?

At 48 cm, the Mate is the largest Coocazoo and has four compartments, including two main compartments. The Porter is 44 cm tall, a little lighter, and can be expanded using compression straps and removable multifunctional straps. It also has an additional pocket in the hip belt.

How do I adjust a school backpack correctly?

First, pack it as you would for a normal school day. Then adjust the shoulder straps so the backpack sits close to the back, fasten the hip belt on the pelvis, and position the chest strap at chest height. Heavy books belong in the compartment closest to the back.
