Travel bag or suitcase? How to make the right choice

Reisetasche oder Koffer? Die perfekte Wahl für jede Reise - Markenkoffer

In short

A travel bag is lighter, more flexible and fits into any car boot. It's ideal for weekends, road trips and tours with changing accommodation. A suitcase protects its contents better, keeps clothing in shape and rolls comfortably over long distances. It's the better choice for flights with checked luggage and longer holidays. Somewhere in between sits the wheeled travel bag.

Which piece of luggage suits you depends less on looks than on your journey: how do you travel, how far do you carry or pull your luggage, and how fragile is what you're bringing along? Here you'll find a direct comparison, suitable models for typical trips, and the right size for a weekend or holiday.

Travel bag or suitcase: the comparison at a glance

Criterion Travel bag Suitcase
Empty weight usually lighter, more allowance for checked baggage heavier due to shell, frame and wheels
Protection for contents low, bumps and pressure pass through high, especially with hard shells
Transport carried by handles, shoulder strap or backpack straps rolls at the airport, on platforms and asphalt
Space in the car adapts to any gap fixed shape, stacks well
Organisation when packing one large main compartment, packing cubes help two halves, packing straps and dividers
Cobblestones, stairs, snow works on any surface wheels have their limits
Storage at home can be folded or stored flat needs a fixed spot

The differences between hard shell and fabric suitcases are explained in our guide Hard shell or fabric.

Travel bag: strengths and weaknesses

The travel bag is the more flexible piece of luggage. It has no fixed shape, so it fits into overhead bins, car boots and cupboards where a suitcase won't fit. Empty, it can be folded up or stored flat.

  • Lightweight: Without a shell and wheels, an empty bag usually weighs noticeably less than a suitcase of the same size. That's extra allowance for souvenirs if your airline charges by weight.
  • Versatile: Many models can be carried as a backpack via stowable shoulder straps, handy on cobblestones, stairs and in snow.
  • Less protection: Pressure from outside goes straight through to the contents. Pack fragile items in the middle, surrounded by soft clothing.
  • Carrying instead of rolling: Packed heavy, a bag without wheels becomes tiring over long distances. That's where a wheeled travel bag helps.

To choose from: travel bags without wheels, compact weekenders and carry-on bags.

Suitcase: strengths and weaknesses

The suitcase shows its strengths on flights and long distances. Packed clothing stays in shape, and with four wheels you can push even heavy luggage along effortlessly beside you.

  • Protection: A hard shell suitcase protects against knocks, pressure and rain. For electronics, bottles and delicate clothing, it's the safer choice.
  • Organisation: Two halves with packing straps and a divider keep clothing separated, and many models also have mesh pockets.
  • Comfort: A telescopic handle and wheels save you from carrying. Four wheels let the suitcase glide upright beside you.
  • Fixed size: A suitcase needs its own space, even empty in the cupboard. Expandable models gain a few extra litres via a zip.

A good middle ground is a fabric suitcase from our soft luggage range: it has wheels and a frame like a suitcase, but is often lighter and has outer pockets for quick access.

More models can be found among the carry-on suitcases, medium suitcases and large suitcases.

Empty weight compared

How much luggage weighs when empty matters especially with budget airlines and weight limits for checked baggage. The examples show the difference at similar volumes:

Model Type Volume Empty weight
Thule Chasm 30L Travel bag without wheels 30 l 1.2 kg
Deuter Duffel Pro 40 Travel bag with backpack straps 40 l 1.2 kg
TITAN UPGRADE S Cabin trolley, hard shell 38 l 2.7 kg
The North Face Base Camp Duffel M Travel bag without wheels 71 l 1.59 kg
Deuter Duffel Pro Movo 60 Wheeled travel bag 60 l 3.32 kg
Travelite Briize M Fabric suitcase, 4 wheels 62 l 3.2 kg
Travelite Air Base M Hard shell suitcase, 4 wheels 71 l 3.2 kg
Samsonite Fyrm 67 Hard shell suitcase, 4 wheels 76 l 3.3 kg

Which size for how many days?

Whether bag or suitcase: the litre capacity depends on trip length and packing style. If you can do laundry along the way, the volume barely needs to grow with the duration.

Trip length Volume good fit
Weekend, 1 to 3 days 30 to 45 l travel bag, cabin trolley
Short break, 4 to 7 days 50 to 70 l large travel bag, medium suitcase
Holiday, 1 to 2 weeks 70 to 110 l large suitcase, wheeled travel bag
3 weeks or more over 110 l XL suitcase or two pieces of luggage

Guide values. All suitcase sizes with centimetres and litres are shown in our guide Suitcase sizes at a glance.

Packing without chaos: Packing cubes bring order even to a travel bag, and in a suitcase they save space. Our 10 packing tips show you how. If you're flying with carry-on only, check the airlines' carry-on dimensions beforehand.

Frequently asked questions: travel bag or suitcase

Is a travel bag or a suitcase better for a flight?

If you're only travelling with carry-on, both work: a cabin trolley rolls comfortably through long terminals, while a soft travel bag adapts to the overhead bin and weighs less when empty. As checked luggage, a hard shell suitcase better protects the contents from knocks and pressure on the baggage carousel.

How big should a travel bag be for a week?

For a week, 50 to 70 litres is a good guide. If you pack light and can do laundry along the way, 40 to 50 litres will do. For a weekend, 30 to 45 litres is enough.

Travel bag or suitcase in the car: which fits better?

In a small boot, the travel bag has the advantage, as it moulds itself into gaps and around other items. With several people and a large boot, suitcases with a fixed shape stack better, and fragile items are protected from pressure inside them.

Can I take a travel bag as carry-on?

Yes, as long as it meets your airline's size and weight limits. Many airlines allow one piece of around 55 x 40 x 20 to 23 cm. A soft bag gives a little, but when packed full it shouldn't exceed the permitted dimensions.

What is a wheeled travel bag?

A wheeled travel bag combines both: a soft bag body with a large opening and two wheels plus a telescopic handle. It's lighter than most suitcases of the same size, yet can still be pulled along. Some models also have stowable shoulder straps.

Can I check in a travel bag as hold luggage?

Yes. Before checking in, tuck away loose straps and shoulder straps so they don't get caught on the baggage carousel, and pack fragile items in the middle, surrounded by soft clothing. For delicate electronics, a suitcase with a fixed shell is the safer choice.
