Austrian Airlines hand luggage 2026 – the rules at a glance

With Austrian, you're allowed to bring at least one personal item on board free of charge in every fare – and from Economy Light upwards, an additional cabin trolley. In Business, it's two trolleys. Via its hub in Vienna (VIE), Austrian takes you all over the world as a Star Alliance member.

1. The cabin trolley

2. The personal item

  • Dimensions: 40 × 30 × 15 cm (new Lufthansa Group size)
  • Free of charge in every fare – including Economy Basic
  • Storage: under the seat in front
  • Suitable for this: underseat bags, small shoulder bags or compact backpacks

New – Economy Basic: The new, cheapest fare Economy Basic no longer includes a trolley – only the personal item (40 × 30 × 15 cm). You can add the trolley online or via the service centre for a fee up until two hours before departure (this isn't possible at the airport), or simply choose Economy Light instead. Tip for status customers: With Star Alliance Gold, you can bring a piece of hand luggage up to 8 kg free of charge even in the Basic fare.

Garment bag instead of a trolley

As an alternative to a classic trolley, Austrian allows a foldable garment bag up to 57 × 54 × 15 cm and 8 kg (it counts as your piece of hand luggage) – practical if you want to keep a suit or dress suit crease-free on board. More tips on this in our guide Transporting a suit crease-free.

Power banks and lithium batteries at Austrian

As part of the Lufthansa Group, Austrian has applied stricter rules for lithium batteries since 15 January 2026:

  • In hand luggage only – never in checked baggage; within reach under the seat in front, not in the overhead bin
  • Maximum 2 power banks per person, up to 100 Wh each; 100–160 Wh only with approval, over 160 Wh prohibited
  • Use and charging on board prohibited

More details and the mAh-to-Wh conversion can be found in our guide Power bank in hand luggage.

Liquids in Austrian hand luggage

EU-wide liquid rules apply: individual containers of a maximum of 100 ml, all together in a transparent 1-litre bag. More on this in our guide Liquids in hand luggage – you'll find the right flight bag with us.

5 money-saving tips for your Austrian hand luggage

  1. Choose your fare wisely: If you need a trolley, Economy Light is often cheaper than Basic plus a trolley add-on.
  2. Basic with just a boardcase: In Economy Basic, an underseat bag up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm is enough – then you travel without an extra charge.
  3. Use your status: With Star Alliance Gold, an 8-kg piece of hand luggage is included for free even in Basic.
  4. Pack to the exact size: Measure your suitcase including wheels and handles – ideally slightly under 55 × 40 × 23 cm.
  5. Choose a lightweight suitcase: Every kilogram of empty weight is deducted from the 8 kg limit. Modern cabin suitcases often weigh under 2.5 kg.
